January 2011 Frederick Ueck (1886-1977) Opening Friday, Jan. 7, 2011 - 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm
Frederick Ueck (1886-1977), was a classic American folk artist, a retired gladiola farmer from Michigan completely self-taught, who carved whimsical, imaginative figures from tree limbs found on his farm. This retrospecive collection of his work features more than 300 of his pieces and some of his hand-made tools.
Completely self-taught, he set out to give life to every tree limb he could get his hands on. His subject matter was diverse, ranging from cowboys to imitations of famous sculptures. The carvings have a special type of distortion, derived partly from naiveté and partly from his allowing each piece of wood to determine the image. He even used the knots in the wood as the focus in some of his carvings.
For the most part, caricature, with exaggeration for comic or grotesque effect, is predominant. Each smiling figure tells a story about someone he might have known. Ueck let his imagination run wild in most of his pieces. Sometimes, for no apparent reason, he decided that some figures should have pointed heads or paddles for arms. Each piece contains a whimsical charm, a sense of humor and a love of carving wood.

This month features BFAI resident artist Tom McHale. Mr. McHale grew up in Chicago Illinois and attended Chicago City College and Northern Illinois University.
During my youth I became interested in art by spending many hours roaming the Chicago Art Institute as a bored adolescent. While at City College, artist/filmmaker Tom Palazzo influenced and encouraged me to explore my interest in art.
Although I attended NIU as an art major I consider myself a self taught artist. This current series of drawings and paintings were developed in response to changes that were occurring in my life.

April 2011 Dale Edwards - Opening Friday April 1, 2011 - 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm
"I received my sculptor's torch from Ogun -The African deity of fire and metals and forge. My grandfather, my father and two brothers cast and molded steel in the foundries of Wisconsin, where I was born."
I did not study sculpting in art school. The marrow, the spirit of art cannot be taught. It comes from deep within and far beyond what any school can teach. Art is the finger print of the soul.
Dale considers art as the highest form of preaching, and his mission is to make people think, be challenged and question by his work.

October 2011 Harold Rotzoll - Opening Friday October 7, 2011 - 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm
Black and white etchings is the medium, which I choose to express my artistic ideas. I use an etching process, that uses dots, put down one at a time.
Most of my completed etchings are figurative and surreal in nature. How I come up with the ideas for my etchings is I start out with the first image, not knowing what the rest of the print will contain. But this first image suggests the second, third, and subsequent images. Eventually, the etching becomes a
flowing piece of artwork.
